Open-plan & desk environments

Most day-to-day work still happens at a desk; open-plan, private office, or a shared unassigned workstation. Whatever the layout, the job is the same: comfortable, focused work for hours at a stretch.

Hybrid work has changed what a desk needs to deliver. Unassigned desks work well when there's real variety of other spaces nearby. Without it, workplace experience drops lower than any other setup measured, including home working.

Two things make the biggest difference: a chair that adjusts in seconds for whoever's using it, and enough acoustic control that focus doesn't depend on a silent room.

• Desk mix: assigned, unassigned, or a blend, and what that means for the space around it
• Variety nearby: unassigned desks only work well when there's a genuine range of other spaces close by to retreat to
• Acoustic control: panels, screens, or layout that reduce noise without shutting the room off
• Seating that adjusts fast: especially where more than one person uses the same desk
• Explain the change: if you're moving to unassigned desking, tell people why. Resistance usually comes from not understanding the reasoning, not from the desks themselves
